GEO vs SEO: What's the Difference, and What Should You Do?
SEO gets your pages ranked in search results. GEO (generative engine optimization) gets your brand mentioned and cited inside the answers that ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews write. They share most of their foundations, but they are measured differently, and a few tactics matter more for one than for the other.
The short answer
SEO and GEO are not rivals. GEO is best understood as SEO's next layer: the same crawlable, trustworthy, useful content, aimed at a new kind of results page where an AI writes the answer and names a handful of sources.
| SEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank a page high in a list of results | Be mentioned or cited inside an AI-written answer |
| Where it shows | Google and Bing results pages | ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode |
| Unit of success | A position (1, 2, 3...) for a keyword | A mention or a citation for a question (a prompt) |
| How it is measured | Rank tracking, impressions, clicks | Asking a fixed set of questions on a schedule and recording who is named |
| How stable the result is | A position changes gradually | An answer can differ from one run to the next |
| Main levers | Crawlability, relevance, links, page experience | The same, plus clear answers, consistent facts about your brand, and mentions on other sites |
What SEO optimizes for
Classic SEO has one job: make a page the best result for a search, so that it ranks and earns the click. You do that with content that matches what people mean, a site search engines can crawl and understand, links and mentions that show the site is trusted, and a page that loads and works well.
The unit of success is a position for a keyword. You can check it today, check it tomorrow and watch it move, which is why rank tracking is the backbone of an SEO report.
What GEO optimizes for
Generative engines answer a question directly. Instead of ten links, the person reads a paragraph and sees a few sources. For a business, the question changes from “what position am I?” to “am I in the answer?”
That gives GEO two outcomes worth separating:
- A mention: your brand or product is named in the answer, with or without a link.
- A citation: your page is shown as a source for part of the answer.
A brand can be mentioned without being cited, and a page can be cited without the brand being named. Both are worth knowing, and they respond to different work.
Where SEO and GEO overlap
Most of what makes a site visible to search makes it visible to AI answers too, because many of these systems look things up on the live web or draw on search results before they write. The overlap is large:
- Crawlability and indexing. If a page cannot be fetched, rendered and indexed, it cannot be used, by a search engine or by an AI that reads the web.
- Authority. Sites that are linked to and talked about by credible sources are chosen more often, in results and in answers.
- Helpful, specific content. A page that answers the question completely and accurately is easier to quote than a thin one.
- Freshness. Out-of-date pages lose out in both, especially for topics that change.
- Clear structure. Headings, lists and tables help a search engine understand a page and help an AI lift the right passage.
Where they differ in practice
- Answer first. A page that states the answer plainly near the top, then explains, is easier for an AI to quote than one that builds slowly to a point. This helps SEO too, but it matters more for GEO.
- Your brand as an entity. An AI has to be confident about who you are and what you do. Keep the name, description, location, pricing and product facts consistent across your site, profiles and listings.
- Mentions beyond your site. Reviews, directories, communities, press and comparison articles shape what an AI says about a brand. A link helps SEO; a plain mention in a trusted source can help GEO even without one.
- Quotable facts. Concrete numbers, definitions and sourced statements give an answer something solid to cite. Vague claims do not.
- Clicks are not the metric. An answer can name you and send no traffic. GEO is judged on visibility in answers; the value shows up later as brand search, direct visits and referrals.
How to measure GEO
You cannot look up a “position” in an AI answer, and the same question can get a slightly different answer each time it is asked. So GEO is measured as a rate over a fixed set of questions:
- Write down the questions your customers actually ask, the ones where you want to be named (for example “what is the best rank tracker for small agencies?”).
- Ask each question on each platform you care about, on a schedule, and record whether your brand is mentioned and whether your site is cited.
- Report the share of answers that include you, per platform, and watch the trend week over week.
Doing this by hand is slow and noisy. SerpBeats runs a set of prompts you choose across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot and Google AI Mode, keeps each answer with its sources, and reports the share of answers that cite your site. Its ranking scans also read the Google AI Overview for every tracked keyword, so you can see whether Google's summary cites you, next to your position.
A practical plan: do both
- Fix the SEO basics first. Make sure your important pages are crawlable, indexed and fast. A free rank checker shows where you stand today for a keyword; a site audit finds what blocks you.
- Pick 15 to 30 prompts. Include category questions, comparison questions and “best X for Y” questions in your market.
- Measure a baseline. Record, per platform, how often you are named and who is named instead.
- Rewrite your key pages answer-first. State the answer in the first paragraph, add the specific facts, and keep one clear page per question.
- Make your brand facts consistent. Same name, description, pricing and location everywhere; add Organization markup and a clear About page.
- Earn mentions where AI looks. Reviews, directories, communities, comparison and how-to articles on other sites.
- Re-measure monthly. Keep what moves the rate, drop what does not.

Is GEO replacing SEO?
No. Generative engines draw on the same web that search indexes, so crawlable, trustworthy, useful content remains the base. GEO adds a second thing to manage: whether you are named in AI answers.
Are GEO, AEO and LLMO the same thing?
In practice, yes. Generative engine optimization (GEO), answer engine optimization (AEO), AI search optimization and LLM optimization all describe working to be mentioned or cited in AI answers. GEO is the most widely used term.
Can I do GEO without SEO?
Not reliably. If your pages are not crawlable, indexed and trusted, there is little for an AI to find or quote. Start with SEO and add GEO on top.
How long does GEO take to show results?
Answers that look things up on the live web can change within days or weeks of a content change. Changes that depend on what a model learned in training are slower and out of your control. Measure monthly, not daily.
How do I know if AI mentions my brand?
Ask a fixed list of questions on each AI platform on a schedule and record whether you are named or cited. SerpBeats automates this for ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Google AI Mode.
